Kelvin in plain English

Color temperature describes how warm or cool white light looks, measured in Kelvin (K). Candlelight is about 1900K, a classic halogen landscape lamp about 2800–3000K, and noon daylight about 5500K. Lower numbers look golden and cozy; higher numbers look crisp and blue.

Most residential landscape lighting in Texas is designed between 2700K and 3000K. That range flatters red brick, Austin stone, cedar and the deep greens of live oaks, and it feels like home rather than a commercial parking lot.

When to mix temperatures

Experienced designers sometimes use slightly cooler light, around 4000K, for moonlighting high in a tree or on silver plants like Texas sage and agave, while keeping the house warm. The key is intention and consistency. Learn more in warm white vs cool white landscape lighting.

FAQ

Questions about this tool

What is the best color temperature for landscape lighting?

2700K is the most common choice for homes. 3000K is a good option for white limestone, light stucco and modern architecture.

Does cool white attract more bugs?

Insects are generally more attracted to the blue end of the spectrum, so warmer light near patios tends to draw fewer bugs.

Can you change color temperature later?

With some fixtures and smart lamps, yes. Many quality fixtures also offer interchangeable lamps in different Kelvin ratings.
